Team-Based Learning method and Five Transformative Teaching Practices

Team-Based Learning method by L. Dee Fink
1)              Individual work: preparation for the next class doing homework (reading materials)

2)              Individual work in class: multiple choice test on homework
3)              Team building
4)              Explanation of scratching of answers in team for the multiple choice test. (alternative: the answers are covered with a tape that can be removed)
The points for answers (1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice etc.) are on whiteboard.
5)              Team work: discussion, scratching and counting of points.
6)              Team result on whiteboard

*A method to avoid hiding reaction by the minority who possibly have the right answers:
All groups or students rise the paper with the answer on the same time/simultaneously.

Five Transformative Teaching Practices by L. Dee Fink, based on the video Getting Better As Teachers:

1.     Change students view of learning

2.     Learning Centered Course design:
2a) Taxonomy of significant learning:
-        understand the key concept,
-        know how to use the content,
-        how to relate this subject to other subjects,
-        understand social and personal implications of knowing about this subject,
-        value this subject, keep learning about this subject.
2b) Integrated course design:
-        goals,
-        activities,
-        feedback/assessment

3.     Team-Based Learning. Social constructivism. –
- dialog: casual use in pairs,
- cooperative learning ~ case study,
- team-based learning ~ problem based learning

4.     Be a leader with your students

5.     Students reflecting on their own learning
