Britt's homework, 19th Sep 2014

Hello!

EngVid is an useful online source for learning English for free with hundreds of  video lessons by experienced native-speaker teachers. New classes are added three times a week, covering grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and more.

For our course I’ve picked out a video about how to remember new words, by teacher Ronnie.
http://www.engvid.com/how-to-remember-vocabulary/

The subject I’m going to teach during  our course is  Estonian language course for Erasmus students. That is why the issue of learning new vocabulary  is very topical for me as well. What really fascinated me about this video was the very easy and nonofficial style of teaching. The teacher excited my  interest with several verbal and nonverbal effects (playing with voice, facial expression, body language etc.). Therefore it was interesting to follow her and learn more about the topic. There are two more things  I’d like to point up about the way she is  teaching:
-          she has involved her personal experience about the topic taught, which always attracts the audience and the

-           talking speed. It was pleasant to listen to her because she didn’t hurry while speaking and she always came to the point.

  1. a good choice - could be used as homework also, if you notice that the students have trouble with new words/terminology. Could be helpful for students from different cultural backgrounds as well, because the atmosphere is informal and the video seems to be like from a regular class.
Thank you, Britt, I hadn't used EngVid before.

  2. Very good choice indeed! :-) At first I thought it is a joke - the lady was hiding herself under the table. But actually her way of teaching is very expressive.

  3. I like the teacher's manner of teaching , the clarity and friendliness. The tips are very useful, I especially like the idea of sticky notes with words on different objects. This mini-presentation has a good structure- she went over all the main points at the end of her talk.

  4. I like this presentation - it's an example of good teaching - expressive and clear. EngVid was a "discovery" for me, and I also chose my video from there.
I think I'll advise my students to watch these presentations.

  5. I have loved, loved, LOVED Ronnie since I "met" her via www.engvid.com (a webpage I always share with my students because it is such a good source of getting answers to FAQs and also it is totally free of charge).

I like her style of presenting inside and out: she is fluent and therefore interesting to listen to, the speed of her speech is indeed slow enough for learners, her emotions and body language, especially her facial expressions, and side comments about herself she inserts here and there to connect better with the audience - priceless! Also the visuals - whiteboard plus marker.

If I wouldn't know better, I would say that this could be (sort of) my style of presenting, too, or a style I would prefer while teaching or giving a lecture.
